Just Got Home from G20 – some more photos
Interesting day. Started out pretty quiet and I chose to head downtown, even though I knew the more lively protest groups would be gathering in the Lawrenceville area, which is just a couple of miles from the Convention Center where the G20 is being held. Their plan was to rally in Lawrenceville’s Arsenal Park and make their down Penn Avenue to the Convention Center. The police apparently did a fine job of stopping them just a few blocks from where they started… sort of. That group, which was estimated to be around 1100 people splintered into a few smaller groups and the police proceeded to play protestor Whack-a-Mole the rest of the afternoon, setting up & dispersing, moving to the next flare up and repeating the process. I should turn on the radio because they may well still be doing that now (about 7:30 eastern time).
After watching the rather enjoyable Free Tibet demonstration (video of them singing their national anthem will be available shortly), I overheard on a police radio that there was something going on near Polish Hill, a really cool neighborhood where I lived for seven years. Being a good Pittsburgher, I knew a short cut. I got there a little too late as the police in riot gear were standing at attention near the Quick-E-Mart. That’s what they do after scattering the protestors. They stand their ground for a few minutes until the protestors go away. I guess the protestors haven’t figured out that they should hide for a a few minutes then come back. At this particular location, the protestors rolled some garbage dumpsters toward the cops. I heard that some anarchists were riding in them, Jackass style, but I can’t confirm. I did get a photo of the dumpsters.
And then there was the Sonic Cannon… I will have to explain that crowd control device and other events of the day later. For now, I really need to eat something and I will be uploading more raw video throughout the evening.
