Not sure if any lower profile arrests have happened yet, but Greenpeace gets to call “first” with their huge banner and rappelling expedition off the West End Bridge.
“In a daring stunt that proved a first test of police preparations for the G-20 Summit, an octet of demonstrators rappelled over the side of the West End Bridge today and unfurled a large banner, then dangled above the Ohio River as rescue crews sought a way to remove them.
The environmental group Greenpeace claimed credit for the incident as well as an effort, thwarted by police, to drop a similar banner from the Fort Pitt Bridge. Five people were arrested there.
By mid-afternoon, the demonstrators remained dangling above the Ohio from the West End Bridge and police were keeping a close watch on other city bridges.
“They’re going to be up there for a long time. I love it,” said Vincent Eirene, a local peace activist.
Others expressed puzzlement, a few flat-out disgust.
“I think they’re a bunch of fruit loops,” said Dave Bradich, who watched the incident from the river banks next to the plant where he works…”
